THE TEAM
Neiman Reed's top management is an integral part of day-to-day trading and work side-by-side with other traders
and operational personnel to be responsive to the needs of our customers. That intensive effort every day
makes a noticeable difference in the way we are able to conduct business.
We prefer our selling staff to be referred to as "traders". Because lumber and plywood are a product of "scarcity"
(i.e., availability dependent upon relations to suppliers with limited supply), a major component of successful
forest products marketing is the timing and cost-effectiveness of the buy. Truly, the most successful salespersons
are those who understand the dynamics of "trading"- securing the products through wise procurement and
completing the transaction through a professional sales effort. Chances are your Neiman Reed sales representative
has buying responsibilities and must devote hours each week to that end.
Each Neiman Reed employee is an important team member contributing directly to filling the needs of our
customers. We have a long history of friendly, knowledgeable, and honest employees who represent the very
best our industry has to offer. Whether you're greeted by a Neiman Reed driver or by a Neiman Reed trading
professional, we hope you're treated with the courtesy and respect that you'd come to expect from an industry
leader. Maybe that's one reason why Neiman Reed has become "America's Largest Stocking Distributor of Pine
Commons".
Ed Langley
Ed Langley joined Neiman Reed when he graduated from California State University, Sacramento
in 1975. He became the wholesale division manager in 1983 and later promoted to the position
of Senior Vice President. Ed has been responsible for directing the company's growth for over
twenty years and specializes in trading pine commons and dry dimension. In his spare time, he
enjoys hiking, gardening, skiing, travel, and piano.
Scott MacKechnie
Scott Mac Kechnie has been involved in sales for Neiman Reed since 1983. Before joining Neiman
Reed, he was the district sales manager for Telecredit Inc. based in Tampa, Florida and
prior to that, he was the general manager for Supreme Courts athletic club in Van Nuys, California.
Scott specializes in door and millwork accounts and manages the sales team at Neiman
Reed. Scott resides in Ventura County and is the proud father of three daughters, Ashley,
Caitlyn and Hannah. His other interests include surfing, golfing, skiing, and fishing.
Tim Cheney
Tim Cheney joined the Neiman Reed team in February 2003 after selling his wholesale lumber
company that he co-owned for 24 years. He brings over 37 years of forest products
industry experience to Neiman Reed. His current position of General Manager has him involved
in many areas of the company, which include property improvements, new product
development, marketing, buying domestic and international panel products, furring strips,
boards, dimension and, of course, selling. His interest includes motorcycling, traveling, astronomy,
astrophotography and golfing. Tim is married to his lovely wife Lynn, who is a
nurse and a gourmet cook. They are the proud parents of two children, Justin, who has
earned a Ph. D. in material sciences at UCSD and Audra who has earned a business degree
at Loyola Marymount University.
Dennis Bauder
Dennis Bauder brings over thirty-five years of lumber experience to the Neiman Reed
staff. Growing up in the "timber country" of Oregon, he earned his stripes in forest
management and lumber manufacturing, first as a tree faller and a grader in a large
sawmill. He has been an active lumber trader for over ten years and prides himself on the
personal attention he gives to each of his customers.
John Banks
John Banks hails from Tuscaloosa, Alabama and made his way to Los Angeles after
a brief career in stand-up comedy. He has over 16 years of sales experience, and as
the newest member of the sales team, John looks forward to a long productive career
with Neiman Reed. John and fellow salesman Greg Mitchell have teamed up their sales
efforts to provide all new customers with a dependable, dedicated, and eager approach
that has earned much success. A fun fact - John met Ed Langley (NR Vice President)
while serving on jury duty. When he's not working, John enjoys mountain biking,
walking the dog, and reading a good book at the beach.
Douglas Greene
Douglas Greene is a seasoned trader, joining Neiman Reed in 1986. He likes the
challenges each new day brings, including calling on customers that span a wide range
of industries. He is particularly well versed in specialty millwork, window and door
manufacturing, furniture manufacturing, and packing and crating. He also sources
many of the panel products, including southern pine and western fir plywood. On a
personal note, Douglas appreciates the outdoors and spends as much time as possible
hiking, bicycling, or just enjoying nature.
Robert Medina
Robert Medina started in the lumber industry in 2001 and has been a lumber trader for Neiman
Reed since early 2003. He handles many order board functions each day and is a key
backup person when other representatives are in the field. His strong areas of experience
are the packing and crating industry and furniture manufacturing. He was recently married
in February 2007 to his lovely wife Kimberly. In his spare time, he likes to go quading
at Pismo Beach, work on cars and attends major car shows. "Cars are my dream" as he
sums it up.
Greg Mitchell
Greg Mitchell began his career with the Neiman Reed family back in 1989 by working at our affiliated
home center Lumber City, now called Do-it Center. After completing undergraduate studies
in psychology at California State University Northridge, he transferred to the wholesale division
in 1995. Greg and fellow trader John Banks have joined sales forces to provide a team approach
in managing all new accounts. They share several areas of expertise including hardwoods, softwoods,
and panel products. They also welcome the challenges of millwork. Together they enjoy
playing integral roles in the company's growth and success. In his personal life, you will find Greg
spending time with his wife Jennifer and their two children Jack and Katie. When time allows,
you may find him on the ice playing hockey or on the golf course frustrated.
Jay Orendorff
Jay Orendorff has been a wholesale lumber trader for over thirty years. He joined
Neiman Reed in 1989 and is consistently a top-producer. He sources stock inventory,
particularly low-grade items, and is responsible for sales to customers across an array
of industries, including crating and furniture manufacturers. Jay loves to travel, play
golf, listen to music, and read. He is the proud father of daughter Emily.
Jose Luis Toriz
Jose Toriz has been trading lumber since 1985, specializing in hardwoods and softwoods
in lumber and plywood. Jose joined Neiman Reed in 1998 and serves English and Spanishspeaking
customers in a vast array of industries. He is responsible for procuring many of
the hardwoods and specialty panel products that Neiman Reed inventories. He resides in
Orange County and has been married for over twenty years.
Dennis Wachs
Dennis Wachs is a graduate of Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon and is a former
schoolteacher. With over twenty years of wholesale distribution experience, he is a familiar
and friendly face in retail lumber yards throughout Southern and Central California. As the
account manager for many of these companies, he enjoys developing innovative programs
that help them meet the current demands of retailing in an ever-changing marketplace.
Additionally, he handles millwork, manufacturing, and entertainment industry accounts
and trades actively in the international and domestic marketplace. His involvement with
third party certification such as FSC and SFI has helped in establishing Neiman Reed as
one of the most diversified, full service lumber companies in the West. On a personal note,
Dennis and his wife Janet are proud parents of daughter Julia. A lover of music, Dennis
plays the piano and guitar and owns an extensive collection of blues and rock music. On a
clear day you'll find Dennis working in his garden or out on the tennis courts.
